Castaways Rescued from Island
March 8, 2021
Stranded for 33 days on a deserted tropical island, three Cuban castaways were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Two men and one woman swam to Anguilla Cay after their boat capsized due to a mechanical failure. They survived by eating coconuts, conches, and rats.
Air patrol saw the three that flagged them down with sticks and cloth. Their official rescue would not come until the next day due to bad weather. Patrol had dropped off food, water, and a radio for communication.
The following day, the U.S. Coast Guard airlifted them to safety then they were taken to a medical center in Florida.
The three did not have any serious injuries reported and were lucky because Lt. Justin Dougherty had this to say to WPLG:
“It was incredible. I don’t know how they did it. I was amazed they were in as good as shape as they were.”
