East High School Gives Back to the Community
December 18, 2019

Everybody loves to wake up on Thanksgiving day with eagerness to eat freshly made turkey, but what happens when you can’t afford one? At East High School the annual StuCo turkey drive is arriving quickly. It is a tradition East High School Student Council does every year. They strive to provide meals for 500 local families in pueblo. It is a way for people who cant afford to have a proper meal on Thanksgiving day to enjoy a full course meal. This is something that represents the school very well according to Shayleese Crowder, Junior Class President. “It shows how East comes together as a community to bring turkeys to help feed people who can’t really provide a Thanksgiving dinner and it has a great impact.” She was then asked if she thinks this year will go as good as last year and she replied “I personally think last year was one of our best years we had with the turkey drive, so it’s going to be hard to compete with! We never know if it will be as good as last year.”
Student Council at East High School is full of caring people who love to see their community happy. I then asked Student Body President Cidonia Ponce, what she looks forward to every year when it comes to the turkey drive. “My favorite part of it all is when we deliver the baskets. All the smiles and thanks given back makes it all worth it. It’s so awesome how one gesture can change someone’s day! I’m so happy I get to contribute to such an impacting activity!” said Ponce. She was also asked, “Why do you think it’s important to do the turkey drive?” She responded, “Well the turkey drive is important because it helps families who aren’t as fortunate as others. We provide dinner for the ones who don’t have the luxury of feasting on holidays. Also, it’s a great way to bring the community together, build friendships, give a helping hand, and building up the reputation of our town.” There you have it. The annual turkey drive took place at East High School on Thursday, November 21st all day. The Eagle Empire surpassed last year’s record and brought in a total of 166 turkeys. Student Council would like to thank the Eagle Empire for their generosity and also DECA for helping out with TLC this year.
